Recording and uploading video screencasts

(For Math 150 students, if you need instructions for creating articles, please go to the assignment page in Canvas.)

We need to be able to record over Westminster Anywhere, which is a bit challenging. Follow the instructions here. (Thanks to Ben Neiswender for figuring out how to make this work.)

Step One: Get Jing

Download and install Jing.

Step Two: Test Audio Recording Equipment

Plug in and test headset or other recording device. Be sure that you are recording using a headset or a high quality internal microphone. Also try to record in a quiet place without a lot of background noise.

Step Three: Start Jing

PC: Click on Start > All Programs > TechSmith > Jing

Mac: Click on Applications Folder > Jing OR go to the Launchpad and click the yellow Jing icon.

A yellow ball will appear on your screen. (Note: If this is the first time you are using Jing, you may be prompted to login or create an account. There may also be a little tutorial you can view.)

Step Four: Open Westminster Anywhere and SPSS

PC: Click Start > All Programs > VMware > VMware View Client

Mac: Click on Applications Folder > VMware View Client

(Note: You may already have the VMware View Client icon saved on your desktop. If so, simply double-click the icon.)

  1. Enter your Username and Password.
  2. Click Login.
  3. Select Academic and in the Display field, select Window-Large (Large Window on a Mac).
  4. Click Connect.
  5. Resize the Westminster Anywhere window until you locate the yellow Jing ball.
  6. Within VMware, open SPSS by clicking on Start> All Programs> IBM SPSS Statistics > IBM SPSS Statistics 21.
  7. Resize the SPSS Window to make it as big as possible, but still fitting within the Westminster Anywhere window.
  8. Open up the data file you want to use for your demonstration.

Step Five : Activate Jing

  1. Mouse over the yellow Jing ball
  2. Click the Capture + ball
  3. Click and drag the crosshairs across the area you want to capture, which in this case should be just the SPSS window in Westminster Anywhere.

Step Six: Begin Recording in Jing

  1. In the bottom left corner you will see a Jing recording toolbar. Click the icon that looks like a film strip, which is the capture video button. (Note: If you have not used your microphone with Jing before, you will be prompted to adjust the volume setting with a test recording.)
  2. You will see a countdown timer, 3-2-1, after which you should begin your recording. (Note: There is a pause function in the Jing recording toolbar if you feel you need to take a break.)
  3. Once you are finished with your SPSS capture, click the stop button on the Jing recording toolbar.
  4. After you click Stop, the Jing playback window will appear.
  5. You can click the large play button in the middle of the screen to watch your recording.
  6. After you watch your recording, title your demonstration in the box below the viewing window.
  7. If you are satisfied with your recording, upload your recording to Screencast.com to allow sharing on the wiki by clicking on the Share via Screencast.com button in the Jing recording toolbar (the first button in the toolbar which looks like three arrows pointing upward).

Step Seven: Share via Screencast.com

  1. After you click the Share via Screencast.com button, you will see two messages:
    1. The file is being uploaded.
    2. The link to the recording has been copied to your clipboard.
  2. Once you received these messages, open a browser, and go to screencast.com.
  3. Login in the upper-right-hand corner using your Jing credentials.
  4. Find the video you want to embed to the wiki.
  5. Click on the video.
  6. You can watch the video and click on the orange show details button below the video recording.
  7. Click on the Share Tab.
8. There are two sharing options. You will want to "Embed on your page." But before copying the embed code, we need to change the content size below the code. Set the "width" to be 800 px. (The height will adjust automatically.)
  9. Copy the embed code using CTRL+C (or Command+C on a Mac).

Step Eight: Embed in the Wiki

  1. Open a new browser tab and navigate to your page on the wiki.
  2. Click "Edit" and go to the spot where you want to insert your video.
  3. Click "Insert" on the upper-right side of the formatting menu.
  4. Click "HTML/JavaScript". (It might just say "HTML".)
  5. In the window, paste the embed code from Screencast.com and click "Next".
  6. Click "Insert Plugin".
  7. This will insert an ugly box into your page. It doesn't look like much, but when you click "Save", you should see your embedded video appear. Click on the video and make sure it plays.

For Chrome and Firefox users: in some cases, you may see the words "Unable to display content. Adobe Flash is required" where there should be a video. It is likely that your browser's security settings are preventing the video from displaying.

If this happens to you, look for the little shield icon in the browser's address bar. in Chrome, it's on the right and it looks like this:

Chrome shield.png

When you click on it, it will tell you the page has insecure content. Click "Load unsafe script." (It's not really unsafe.)

In Firefox, it's on the left and it looks like this:

When you click on it, there will be a button that says "Keep Blocking". You do not want to block the content, so click on the little arrow next to that button. One of the options is to "Disable Protection on This Page" and you'll click on that instead.
